    Aluminum Hypophosphite and Magnesium Hypophosphite are phosphorus-based salts used in different industrial applications. Both products contain the hypophosphite ion, but their properties are different because they contain different metallic elements. Solubility, thermal behaviour and final use must be considered before selecting either material.

    Aluminum Hypophosphite

    Aluminum Hypophosphite, also called aluminum phosphinate, is a fine white powder with the chemical formula Al(H2PO2)3. It has low water solubility, high phosphorus content and good thermal stability.

    Its main application is as a non-halogenated flame-retardant additive in engineering plastics and polymer systems. It may be used in polyamides, polyesters, TPU, ABS and other thermoplastic formulations. During burning, phosphorus-based additives can support the formation of a protective char layer. This layer can slow the movement of heat and flame through the polymer.

    Aluminum Hypophosphite may also be used in masterbatches and plastic compounds. Its performance depends on polymer type, loading level, particle size, processing temperature and the other additives used in the formulation. A laboratory trial should be completed before commercial production.

    Magnesium Hypophosphite

    Magnesium Hypophosphite is a white crystalline powder. It is often supplied as magnesium hypophosphite hexahydrate, with the formula Mg(H2PO2)2.6H2O. It is highly soluble in water.

    Because of its solubility, Magnesium Hypophosphite is used in veterinary products and animal nutrition as a source of magnesium and phosphorus. It may also be used as a fertiliser additive, reducing agent, flame-retardant component and polymer stabiliser.

    Before purchasing Magnesium Hypophosphite, buyers should confirm water solubility, COA, SDS and export-ready packaging.

    Important Differences

    The main difference is solubility. Aluminum Hypophosphite is practically insoluble in water and is mainly selected for polymer and flame-retardant applications. Magnesium Hypophosphite is highly soluble and is more suitable for aqueous, nutritional, veterinary and agricultural formulations.

    Their storage needs are also different. Aluminum Hypophosphite should be protected from moisture and handled in a way that limits dust. Magnesium Hypophosphite should be kept in sealed packaging because its hydrate form can be affected by storage conditions.

    Before ordering, buyers should compare purity, moisture, particle size, solubility, packaging and application grade. The COA and SDS should be checked for every batch. Final selection should be based on formulation testing rather than price alone.

    The choice also depends on the way the chemical enters the production process. A water-soluble material may be easier to add to a liquid formulation, while a low-solubility powder may be more suitable for a polymer melt. The plant’s mixing equipment, temperature range and dust-control system should be considered before selection.

    Buyers should not assume that a flame-retardant result will be the same in every polymer. Testing may be required for burning behaviour, mechanical strength, colour, moisture uptake and processing stability. A supplier can provide technical information, but the final approval must come from the customer’s own product testing.

    The formulation team should also check whether the additive affects processing speed, surface appearance or the strength of the finished plastic part.
